2008 World Series Champion Philadelphia Phillies Grounds Manager Mike Boekholder presented his Baseball Management and Maintenance Seminar to members of the Oregon Sports Turf Managers Association on March 4, 2009 at the Delta Park Sports Complex in Portland, Oregon.
Mike covered various aspects of turf grass culture at Citzens Bank Park, and his program for building and maintaining a professional level skinned area, mounds, and home plate and bag areas.
The event, sponsored by The Rainbird Corp, was also a Membership Drive for the Oregon Sports Turf Managers Association. For the cost of the seminar, the attendees were able to hear one of the best sports field managers in professional baseball, tell how he produces a professional level field on a consistent basis, and the attendees payment also covered a one year membership in the Oregon Sports Turf Managers Association.
A preliminary count, showed over 50 new members joined the group as a result of the membership drive portion of the event. An additional presentation in the afternoon session, was put on by Debbie Kneeshaw, City of Portland Parks - Delta Park Sports Complex. Debbie presented a condensed version of her " Replacement of Synthetic Turf Fields". This is the same presentation she gave at the 2009 National Sports Turf Managers Association Conference in San Jose in January 2009. Debbie is also the current President of the Oregon Sports Turf Managers Association.
For any agency or owners of synthetic fields, you know the replacement aspect of these fields is an uncharted area. Debbie's presentation can answer a lot of questions, that are sure to arise, as the replacement of these fields becomes more common as the fields age and face replacement.
There were a total of over 90 individuals that attended this seminar. That is the largest known number of sports turf managers that has gathered in Oregon in recent history. These individuals represented schools, parks, private sports facilities and commercial business's serving sports turf managers in Oregon and Southwest Washington.
